Forgotten Quirks - Charades

I forget how charades is game I play daily while I live overseas.

Except this game's outcome will determine if the other person will understand what I am trying to say in Dari (not English!).

Don't get me wrong, I have conquered the language basics. I  can speak and communicate. I can tell stories. However, there are still some vocab that I just don't know... or forget...

And at those times... charades is a game that has become my best friend.

Maybe one day I will have a series of pictures of me speaking to a local in a language other than English...

So until then, enjoy imagining it!

Language Blurbs - 2

Today we had a local lady over to visit.

It is tradition to serve tea or Chai when they come to visit. You always, always, always make sure they have chai.

So I proceeded to ask her is she wanted more chai (in Dari), and it is suppose to sound something like this...

'Dega chai mekArIn?' (literally, More Chai will you drink?)

and what came out was...

'cheggai...' (hum, well a mixture of the first two words)

and we just laaaauuuuggggghhhheeeeddddd and laughed...

....

and laughed some more.

(oh and she didn't want any more chai)

Lanuage Blurbs 1

While I was in the states Christmas of 2011 -

So I went to the store with my mom(LarryandConnie Blunt), and she asked me what I needed for my dessert.

I responded with Cocoa (in English), then within a second I thought "No that's not the word."

So I said Cocoa in Dari. (which is pronounce Kah- Kow)

Then I stopped, we looked at each other with this questioning empty stare for another second.

So I said..."which word is it?"

In which case, she confirmed with "The first one."

Then I proceeded to explain ...

"I have been using the English word calling our uncle Cocoa all year because it's the Dari word for uncle, but the second word is the word for the English Cocoa in Dari...

*Pause*

and it doesn't mean anything in English...."
