My Mom: "How far are you from there?"
Me: ...thinking... "ummm"
My Mom: "And don't give it to me in kilometers....
..... or meters"
One of the biggest skills I have picked up in the last 3.5 years is that I now am somewhat proficient in using the Metric System.
Somewhat meaning that I tend to generalize a lot of measurements.
For example...
I know now that 25-30 C is a nice warm, but 40-50 degrees C is realllllly hot (over 100 degrees F)
I know that 0 degrees C is freezing but -17 is colder than freezing. :) (or more like 0 degrees F)
I know now how to measure food items without using cups and teaspoons but with grams. (This also includes cooking the turkish way with is just using household 'water' cups and 'çay' cups as measuring tools.)
I know that 250 grams is about a cup.
I know that 80 kph is about 50 mph. And 100 kph is about 60 (which I am not allowed to drive in certain vehicle sizes within Turkey...)
I know that 23 kgs is 50 lbs exactly, and that 30 kgs is about 70 lbs. (and when I way my suitcases I will say to myself.. that is way over 23 kgs.
I know that 80 kgs is about 160 lbs.
I know that each kg is 2.2 lbs - I order all my groceries in kgs now including fruits, dry goods, and meat.
I most likely could keep going, but I won't.
It happens to be one of these skills, no so much unlike learning a language, that tends to be non-transferable and somewhat hard for me to explain to others about how to actually convert measurements in your head...
Just know, that it is something I have conquered and so can you! (if you ever live in a place that only using metrics.
