One of the way people heat their homes here is through a sandalee. It uses coal and is placed under a low table with a heavy blanket spread across the table that falls over the sides. More of the poorer families have one of these. It is a cheaper way to provide heat for your family. Only problem is the carbon monoxide poisoning that can come from closed rooms. Some families put their children or babies to far underneath the blanket (not knowing) and their children can die of it.
Everyone can place their feet and legs under there to keep warm.
This is one from the Lodge we stayed at. 3 large watt bulbs can generate quite a bit of heat without the Carbon Monoxide. Only problem with this is that it requires electricity which isn't always available.
Us staying cozy under the warm sandelee. This is also where we slept for the nights we stayed at the lodge. We all had our own little mattress that stemmed out from the sandalee so our feet were soaking up some of the heat all night.
With all of our legs under there, it gets a little crowded.
